Emotion Coaching

Emotion Coaching is an evidence-based approach that helps young people develop emotional regulation skills. Originally developed by John Gottman as a parenting approach, it has been adapted for schools and uses four core steps to help engender emotional resilience, empathy and problem-solving skills within young people.  Emotion Coaching fosters warm, responsive relationships between staff and students through self-regulation and co-regulation. Widely used in UK schools, it is particularly effective for children in care, those with attachment difficulties, or those who have experienced trauma.
